Equine-Assisted Therapy
CMHC's board-certified counselors work with equine specialists at Wellspring of Life Farm and a therapy horse to create a dynamic team to support the short and long term goals of participants who are dealing with emotional, cognitive and physical challenges.
Through teamwork and encouragement, participants explore indepth curriculum covering an introduction to anatomy, behavior, movement, and care of their therapy animal. Sessions focus on problem-solving strategies using interactive activities.
Psychotherapy sessions are centered on the theory that horses can offer vital feedback to participants and therapists because of the horse’s extreme sensitivity. Horses use their acute senses developed through years of survival as prey to read a person’s emotional and physical interactions; hence, horses give direct feedback by their own reactions to a participant’s emotions and physiology during a session. As a reactionary creature, horses will directly reflect the anxiety levels experienced by the participant which enables participants to build on problem solving strategies with the assistance of the therapist.
Wellspring of Life Farm is a certified PATH Center and follows PATH standards for therapeutic activities. www.pathintl.org
No prior horsemanship or dog experience is required to participate.
